The mesosphere is the third layer of the mantle and lies underneath asthenosphere; it can be around 2,550 km wide. It is the strong lower part of the mantle and is highly compressed. The velocity of seismic waves increases in the Earth's mesosphere compared to the velocity in the lithosphere and asthenosphere.
